WESTERN HIGH SCHOOL

The Western Music Department is proud of its long-standing tradition of excellence. Our students consistently demonstrate outstanding talent and commitment, earning recognition as some of the strongest young musicians in Indiana. Each year, our ensembles receive numerous honors through ISSMA contests, ICDA All-State Choir and All-State Jazz Choir, IMEA All-Region Choir, honor ensembles, and Solo and Ensemble competitions.

Band

Western’s band program is one of distinction. The Concert Bands, Jazz Band, and Marching Band have earned gold ratings at ISSMA contests for decades. The Western Marching Panthers hold a state record with 18 State Finals championships, most recently in 2021. Both the Wind Symphony and Concert Band continue to achieve Gold Ratings, often with “With Distinction” honors. In 2023, the Jazz Band entered ISSMA’s Jazz Contest for the first time in school history and earned a Gold Rating. The Winterguard, a vital part of the band program, has also advanced to IHSCGA State Finals. Each year, more than 100 students proudly participate in Western’s band program.

Choir

The Western Choir Program is equally accomplished and highly respected across the state. For the past 16 years, our Concert Choirs and Vocal Jazz Ensembles have consistently earned Gold Ratings, including numerous “With Distinction” awards, at ISSMA contests. Western High School Choirs have also been recognized as All-Music Award recipients for six years—an honor reserved for Indiana’s top choral programs. Most recently, the Vocal Jazz Choir has qualified for ISSMA State Finals for two consecutive years, winning the prestigious Honor Ensemble Award in 2023, along with caption awards for Best Soprano Section and Best Bass Section. With more than 125 students participating each year, our choirs showcase excellence, dedication, and Panther pride.
